Toronto, Ontario

Nathan Cole is a visual artist, photographer, writer, and aspiring naturalist based in Toronto, Canada. Nathan’s work has been greatly informed and enhanced by international artist residencies, and the incredible diversity of wildlife surrounding them. He explored the lush valleys of Puntarenas, Costa Rica during the Mauser EcoHouse, the desert landscape of Rajasthan while attending the Farm Studio residency in India, and hills of oak and eucalyptus at arte ventura in Andalucia, Spain. He has exhibited his work across North America and internationally, including in the Arizona-Sonora Desert Gallery, Zurich Main Station, and the John B. Aird Gallery in Toronto. Awards for his work include 3rd place for the Boynes Emerging Artist Award, Best in Show for “Artists of the World” show at the Tall Sequoia Gallery, and a semi-finalist at ARTBOX.Projects Barcelona and Miami. In 2022, he was one of three finalists for the Breakthrough Artist Award given out by the Toronto Arts Foundation. His scratchboard work and photography have been published in ArtAscent and Murze Magazines. Nathan has a BFA from Western University in London, Canada. His work is funded in part through grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.

Q+A

Favourite medium

I have been creating Quill on Scratchboard works for the last decade. My patient personality and fascination with detail lent itself well to the medium. I find the textures I can create are perfect for capturing the wildlife I dearly love, and the black and white contrast lends itself well to the chiaroscuro compositions I love in art.
